Pres Ali leads honorary ride as MoM marks four years of community impact
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali led an honorary bicycle ride on Sunday morning as more than 100 cyclists gathered on Main Street to support the fourth anniversary celebrations of Men on Mission (MoM), an initiative focused on promoting positive male role models, strengthening families and building stronger communities.
The president completed two honorary laps alongside other officials and cyclists before the start of the event, which also promotes physical activity and men’s health.
In brief remarks, President Ali highlighted the importance of men taking greater responsibility in their families and communities, while commending the public and private sector partners, particularly members of the joint services, for supporting the initiative.
“We believe that men have an important responsibility in creating the environment for safer and stronger families, but we need to devote more time towards that.”
While the initiative’s housing, feeding, extra lessons and youth development programmes provide tangible assistance, its broader impact lies in helping to change behaviour, break negative cycles and encourage men to take their responsibilities more seriously.
To this end, Dr Ali underscored the role men must play in preventing violence against women and ensuring that boys and teenagers grow into responsible individuals who can positively influence society.
Men over 40 were encouraged to speak with their doctors and use available health services to support early detection of any illnesses.
Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lieutenant Colonel Eon Murray outlined several achievements of MoM over the past four years, noting that more than 160 families have benefitted from homes constructed through the initiative, while over 400 households have received materials to repair their homes.
The programme has also invested in children through feeding, mentorship and homework assistance, with approximately 150 children benefitting from its weekday activities.
Lieutenant Colonel Murray said MoM has also expanded its prison outreach, engaging incarcerated men while extending support to their children to help prevent negative cycles from continuing across generations.
The fourth anniversary celebrations continue with a series of community-based activities, including clean-up exercises, mentorship engagements, youth outreach and other programmes to strengthen families and support vulnerable groups across Guyana.
Through these efforts, MoM continues to advance its commitment to building responsible male role models and fostering stronger families and communities.
